I noticed as I was walking from the library to class that someone had chalked a link to this website on the SIUE blacktop in two places.
I just got out of class and came back to the library and found one of the places where this link was written 'guarded' by a policeman and the other place where it was posted was now washed over and only a puddle, flanked by a police cruiser, remained in its place.
Is this censorship?

I'm curious, what exactly is "silly" and "frustruating?" Is it the fact that we are exercising our rights to free expression and to a redress of our grievences? Free speech is a foundation of democracy and a crucial part of the checks-and-balances of our system. It's our responsibility to keep a watch on our leaders. In addition, open discussion and debate are elemental values of the university. I approve and applaud the fact that you are willing to debate your issues in an academic forum. We value that as well, as evidenced by this blog.
However, if the "this" to which you are refering is the ongoing discussion, then I too am "frustrated" by your lack of commitment to the academic dialogic process. If you support Poshard, then I invite you to post your reasons here and let's discuss it instead of resorting vague and emotional name-calling.

Ever since I first heard of this plagiarism issue I was quite literally appalled. My first gut reaction was to call for not only Poshard's resignation but the removal of his PhD. Looking back I realize that those thoughts may have been a little too strong, or are they?
From the time I began school and even now as a graduate student, I have always been aware of plagiarism and the consequences of such an infraction. The student would either fail the paper, or fail the class as a whole. It never mattered whether or not the plagiarism was intentional or not. These consequences, whether too severe or not were the overwhelming reality especially at the collegiate level.
I think there are many concerns to adress here, none of which will be solved in a clean, quick manner. Discussion of this will occur on the upward level of the academic world for several months and even possibly years to come. I would just strongly advise students now, as well as myself, that this issue coming to light is NOT license to plagiarize ANYTHING that you turn in, or even don't turn in. Plagiarism is still wrong, no matter what. Don't do it at all, and you will be the better person for it.
Carl, after reading your post, I have a question. You ask why people are blowing up over a twenty four year old mistake. You acknowledge he made a mistake then? If so, why shouldn't he be punished for it? Suppose a murderer was caught twenty four years after he committed a crime, should he or she go unpunished?
Your comment is absurd to say the least. Take for instance, the BTK killer. This man killed ten people between 1974 and 1991, and went uncaught. When he WAS finally caught, the man, Dennis Rader was a Cub Scout leader, as well as a respected member of his church. He was caught and arrested in 2005, fourteen years after his last murder. Couldn't one argue that he is a changed man and should go unpunished for mistakes that were decades old? Would you ask the families of the victims why they were blowing up over mistakes that happened decades ago?
I suppose that comparing plagiarism to murder is a bit extreme, but my point remains.

Today's standard of plagiarism is not the same as it was 24 years ago. If we are going to hold one man's dissertation from the mid-80's to today's standards, why shouldn't we do the same for everyone?
Poshard's committee did not find plagiarism. The graduate school did not find plagiarism. The review committee set up by the BOT said the examples of plagiarism they found were consistant with a writing style of the time. Therefore you cannot go back in time and punish someone for something that wasn't against the rules when he/she did it.
A better analogy would be to use slavery. At one time slavery was legal in this country, however one day a law was passed and it became illegal (overly simplified, I know). Now, the US government did not go find all former slave owners (founding fathers) and punish them for doing something which was wrong no matter what time period we're talking about, but legal none the less.

Erik, read my post more thoroughly, I said I am reconsidering furthering my education here, not that I had made up my mind. I have already paid tuition for this semester, and I plan to finish out the year at least anyways. As long as I am still a student here, I do plan to actively protest the issue at hand. Also, you say that you can't punish someone for something that is against the rules now but not when they committed the act, specifically bringing up the term "ex post facto" and the Contitution. You say that this is not a criminal issue, and yet you bring up issues that deal with laws. Which is it? You can't apply the the fact that the Constitution bans Ex Post Facto laws in the United States while stating that this is not a criminal issue. Apples and oranges right?

So what is your rationale for holding someone's actions from a quarter century ago against them now, even though there wasn't a problem then? Why are we nitpicking Poshard only?
If you can give me a definitive reason, then I'll keep quiet. My use of ex post facto is to illustrate a point. Everyone is arguing that Poshard's actions were illegal, if you are going to argue that plagiarism is a criminal act then you need to mind what the Constitution allows concerning laws and punishments. Poshard should only answer to the criteria of the mid-80's, not the criteria of today.
The slavery metaphor I've used illustrates my point quite clearly.
How would you appreciate it if in 25-30 years you were called out for using a dated standard of citation in any paper you've written? Of course the standard is dated, so is the paper. You have to take this into context when assessing the situation.
If you are going to hold Poshard to the modern criteria, you must go back and assess all dissertations from that period and act accordingly and uniformly. To pretend that Poshard was the only act of wrong doing (even though the review committee noted that several other dissertations from the time used the same citation style) is absurd. Why aren't we pushing to have the degrees of those other dissertations revoked because of the infraction?

True. However, the word “this” is a pronoun with an unclear referent, not a clarification. In fact, it’s STILL not clear exactly to what “this” is referring. Is it the poster? The blog? The ideas? Actually, our hits at this site have been steadily climbing despite only word-of-mouth promotion. Since we have been interviewed by a couple of local papers, I expect many more posts.

SIUC's Conduct Code allows anyone found committing inadvertant plagiarism the chance to resbumit their paper.
Poshard did not select the committee. The BOT did. They are Poshard's bosses. This is more propaganda tripe from AFAC cronies.

Anyways, that's a very good point Erik obviously if you're a surgeon and you cheated your way through school you would be able to prove you're a good doctor.
But Poshard is an educator. He's a teacher, so when was the last time he taught?
A surgeon must continue in their school to learn about updated and different techniques and medicine, just like a teacher need to keep going to school to learn about different styles and standards of teaching. Poshard does not teach and has not continued his school since he got his PhD though. So, in all honesty, I think he wanted to take the 'easy' way to make money and took the even easier way to be able to. He's been taking advantage of a degree he DIDN'T earn for the past two decades.
But why stop him now?

You're right, how silly of me to ever think that this man actually cared about education, let alone get a career in it.
Primary and secondary education administrators are required to have a background in teaching. In order to become a principal, one must receive a Master of Education Administration in Illinois, but schools require you have 5 years of teaching experience before they will hire you. Then do become a superintendant, you must have 5 years of principal experience as well as a PhD. Either way, you are still 5-10 years removed from the classroom.
I was referring to college administrators. I thought that was a given in the current discussion.
It takes years to get to the top adminstrator position at a university. Even if at one point a person was faculty, he/she would then become a chair, dean, and possibly some other level of administration (see provost or chancellor). It's not as if someone with teaching experience has had classroom experience within 5-10 years of becoming President.
Poshard was a politician with a stong interest in education (ahem Paul Simon). The BOT saw this as an opportunity to bring more funding to the university.

You are wrong about Poshard though, he has previous experience as a high school teacher and coach at Galatia and Thompsonville, director of the Southern Illinois Educational Service Center, and vice chancellor for administration at SIUC. He was appointed to the BOT by Governor Blagojevich in 2004.
As a politician he always worked to help SIU. He refused to accept money from PAC's because he saw it as unethical. When he ran for governor in 1998, his campaign platform was for honesty and ethics in government.
Being a teacher hardly qualifies you to be an administrator.

Here is my issue. It is how it was handled. It never should have been reviewed by an internal board. This discredits our university and is diserving of criticism from other members of acadimia. We are being watched and we should have been smarter. It needs to be reviewed again by an independant panel of unbiased members, his disortation investigated and compared to past disortations around the same time, and we will then and only then support the decision. Maybe he will be found innocent again. It is disheartening that people are against this idea. Lets get to the truth and clear our name. If not we will continue to see the standards of excellence fall at SIUE and SIUC.
I would like to put it on record that I support the idea of an external review.
I would hope the external review could work it into their schedule to also to a review of the BOT and everyone involved in AFAC (especially if they are conducting vengeful witch hunts on taxpayer money)
Personally, the university as a whole needs an external review....but that would take years and most likely result in something that wouldn't be unlike a closing of the institution.
