Someone posted a comment in colby's last post about two of the three chalk spots we had being washed away and a third being "gaurded" by a cop. A few hours later colby and I went out to see what had happend, and all three spots were washed away. So this does lead me to believe that we are trying to be censored for what we are doing. We were going to go to Kimmel office to see what had happend, but when we had gotten there it was already closed, so we will have to wait until tommarrow to see what has happend. If anyone has futher information on what happend with this, respond so we know what is really going on.

I walked by a chalked sign the other day that said something about "academic terrorism" - are these the signs you're talking about? If so, maybe it was the "terrorism" reference that made them was out the signs(?)
Oops - I meant "wash" out the signs.
I know that you have to get permission to chalk on the sidewalks. Did someone from your group do that? If so and then the chalkings were removed, that's a whole entire issue that should be addressed on this campus. That is indeed censorship.
I am interested to know what you find out.
By the way, I commend all of you for taking such an active role in this debate. It's important that students also be heard.

We have a permit and the message that was erased was previously approved. It seems to be a case of either vandalism or censorship
The flagship campus of SIU's student paper, the DE has censored the voices of the student on the newspapers website.
All comments for articles have been suspended due to their negative nature. Rather hypocritical when the DE has ran several editorials bashing the university and Poshard.
Much of the feedback on the DE website carried very negative responses to the actions of the DE, not only in Poshard scandal but with the coverage of a student death this past week. Many found it inappropriate to put a picture of the student being carted out of the dorm on a stretcher, just before he was pronounced dead at the hospital, on the front page.
The DE quickly went from being a highly respected newspaper to a pawn of AFAC and a collection of disrespectful journalists.
By shutting down comments on the website, the DE can hand pick letters it wishes to publish, which will never accurately reflect public opinion, much like their editorials do not accurately reflect the opinion of the entire DE staff.
I'm encouraged to see you guys fighting to the good fight. Keep it up!

The university washed it away after they deemed it graffiti.
They claim, they thought it was spray paint instead of chalk.
Yep, I believe it's censorship because they used the same stuff during the pep rally...And why would the police use WATER to get rid of spray paint? Also, they only left one word left "Academic". Why? Why would you erase all of the message except the word Academic?
Another thing, wouldn't you realize after--oh about 3 tries--that chalk runs off a LITTLE differently. Spray paint would have to be chipped off while chalk will just turn your water murky.
And again, 2 West (from Bluff) used Spray Paint on their grass...They didn't do anything. 2 West didn't even have permission to write all the stuff they did, but when they painted the rocker earlier this year, they spray painted the grass around it.
BTW: This is me, Sara. I was the one that got the permission from Kimmel. And Kimmel has decided to let us use their regular sidewalk chalk since the University screwed up. Kimmel didn't even KNOW my stuff got erased until this morning. Which brings up another question. "Why didn't they just ask the people in charge of who gets to write on the walkways (Kimmel) if it was suppose to be there or not?"
At least one thing about the two campuses is consistant. Keeping the student voice silent.
If SIUe tries to censor us.. all i have to say is "IT'S GO TIME!" Also we have a full 2 weeks to chalk and let our voices be heard and that is exactly what we are doing. Every time the quad dries out we will re-chalk time after time after time.
So you crazy kids have a plan to reopen the DE to the voice of the student?
