Hey Jill I just wanted to tell you that I will not be going to the Board of Trustees meeting this Thursday at Carbondale. I have been following the Poshard Scandal since the beginning in September. I spoke out at the last Board of Trustees in Sept when they were in Evergreen Hall and at the Student Senate meeting and at the Faculty Senate Meeting Im just real tired of this BS and I want it to be over with. I encourage you to keep this momentum going when you go to the meeting with your friends but its over for me so I am glad to pass the Torch to you. I will not be going to Carbonadale either, I would love to still be able to go but I am very sick and have been dragging myself to class even though I feel totally rotten and miserable.. but this battle against plagiarism will not be over until a.)Poshard decides to be a man and take full responsibility for his actions and resign or b.)a revised policy about plagiarism is issued stating a student will not be failed or expelled upon first account of plagiarism. I believe this is setting a double standard, if Poshard can get away with plagiarism and is only told to correct his mistakes without facing any other consequences, students have this same right. Its not saying we as students have the right to plagiarize, just saying if the same situation arose with a student within the SIU system they should be able to have a 2nd chance before facing a harsher consequence. I do not believe anyone else from my class is still planning to go due to gas prices and some kids do not have cars with them here on campus. I just wish people would get smarter and get Poshard out of office or change the plagiarism policy to make things fair.

How would Poshard's resignation fix the problem with those responsible for this? Look at the big picture people. Poshard was the student, he was not affiliated with the administration and faculty which allowed this 24 years ago. If you want to fight the fight, go after the BOT, the Department of Education, the Graduate School, and those who served on the review committee and dissertation committee.
Why is Poshard singled out for accountability in a society where it is obvious we have absolutely no accountability at all? If you want to hold Poshard to this lofty standard, why not hold everyone to the same standard? What about the people that did this to the university? The original committee, the Graduate School, the Department of Education, the new committee, AFAC, and the BOT? If you are so keen on what is morally right, why don't you go after the source of the indiscretion, not the scapegoat.
Poshard did not approve his dissertation. He did not appoint a review committee, he did not choose the BOT, he did not have a capacity in the Graduate School or Department of Education. He was simply a student. If this is such a black eye to the university, then go after everyone who allowed it to happen, not the person who allegedly did it. All the resignation of Poshard will accomplish is nothing....other than make some professors with delusions of grandeur happy sitting in their ivory towers. Maybe they know exactly what they are doing. By focusing on Poshard (the student) they take the focus of the failure of academe which allowed us to get to this point in the first place.
It is the fault of the institution, not of a lone gunman.
Your calls for accountability may be justified if you were calling for the head of the monster that did this, but instead you'd rather focus on the tail.
Everyone on this blog fails to see the whole picture. You, like the faculty of SIUe, fail to see the real problem because you are too focused on Poshard. Maybe everyone at your campus is in bed with Chris Dussold and AFAC.

There's nothing we can do about the BOT or anyone else because they are not profiting anymore from their ignorance/stupidity. What are we to do or ask for from people that are DEAD? We just have to suck it up right there and make sure that THIS committee isn't making the same mistakes.

These people are still in power. The current BOT are the ones allowing this to happen, not Poshard. The current administration is just as much as fault as the administration in 1984. The BOT was presented with 'proof' that Poshard plagiarized and told him to fix the problems and say he was sorry. Same goes for the review committee and Chancellor Trevino.

You have students attending BOT meetings, yet at those meetings you can only speak out against Poshard? Why can't you call for the resignation of the BOT and have them admit their mistake? How about the same for the review committee?
Poshard did NOT make the decision which allows him to remain President. His bosses (BOT) did.
